Date Night Idea: Craft a Couple’s Cocktail

Did someone say homemade cocktails? Shake things up a bit with a sweet at-home cocktail party for two
by Paired

Bring happy hour home this date night by perfecting your perfect couple’s cocktail. Not only will you save some money by mixing it up yourselves (your welcome, new year’s savings plan) but it’s also a fun way to reminisce about drinks together gone by, learn a new skill together and enjoy some cocktails too. Hic.

According to psychologist Esther Perel, happy couples find a good mix of predictability and newness. This newness, she says, is essential for keeping passion and attraction alive. It doesn’t have to be dramatic, even making something new together builds trust, fun, and satisfaction that the relationship is capable of doing new things.

Whether you go boozy or booze-free, a cocktail making date night is the perfect way to shake up your routine.

How you create your couple’s cocktail is up to you. You could:

  • Recreate the cocktails you loved together on your first date;

  • Share your all-time favorite cocktail recipes with each other and choose a winner;

  • Mix up both of your favorite cocktail ingredients to create something truly unique;

  • Challenge each other to create a tasty cocktail out of the contents of your drink’s cabinet, or;

  • Try something new – check out our mojito recipe below

Sweet for My Sweet Strawberry and Mint Mojitos

Serves 2 ❤️❤️

The beauty of this recipe is that it's super versatile. Strawberries can be substituted for another fruit of your choice – such as cherries, raspberries or blackberries – and the rum can be switched out for extra soda water or lemonade for a non-alcoholic version.

Preparation time: 15 minutes

Things you’ll need: Rolling pin, straws or cocktail stirrers, and a couple glasses (around 12 ounces) (Collins glasses will do – they need to be wide enough to fit a rolling pin in.)

Ingredients

  • 1.5 limes

  • 4 tbsp demerara sugar

  • 6 strawberries

  • 2 cups of crushed ice

  • 4 mint leaves, plus sprig for serving

  • 2 ounces white rum

  • 2 ounces soda water or lemonade

Method

  1. Cut the limes into quarters lengthways and place three pieces into each serving glass.

  2. Add 2 tablespoons of sugar to each glass. Then, use the end of the rolling pin to squash the limes and mix them with the sugar.

  3. Hull the strawberries (cut off the leafy top with a sharp knife) and add three to each glass. You can crush those with the rolling pin, too.

  4. Fill the glass with crushed ice. Scatter the mint onto the ice leaving a few sprigs for garnish. Divide the rum evenly between both glasses and then top with soda or lemonade.

  5. Mix everything together with a spoon or stirrer, add your mint garnish, and serve!🍹
